This international exhibition is intended to be one of the most important exhibitions ever devoted to the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. This exceptional exhibition has been put together by a Belgian-Luxemburg team that includes engineers, historians, graphicists and craftsmen. This multidiscipline team has as its goal to make the best possible use of the most recent published historical and scientific research about Leonardo da Vinci. The team has progressively been able to make good the challenge it so boldly accepted: to increase the number and update the reconstructions of existing da Vinci models, for the purpose of deepening our knowledge of the genius of the Renaissance.
THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF MACHINES BY LEONARDO DA VINCI IN THE WORLD
Previous exhibitions about Leonardo da Vinci have displayed the machines made at the initiative of the IBM company in the 1970s and 1980s. They were the subject of several expositions and various loans to museums and other institutions. These machines were approximately 50 in number. However, nowadays they no longer correspond to the results of the most recent historical research into Leonardo da Vinci. Above all, there are not enough of them to allow visitors to understand and appreciate the totality of the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. These collections can currently be seen at Chateau du Clos-Lucé in Amboise and in Milan.
Since the 1970s, historical and scientific research into Leonardo da Vinci has moved on significantly. First, it is important to allow today's visitors to discover 'up-to-date' models, which reflect the most recent publications about the genius of the Renaissance. Second, we have decided to increase the number of machines on show, with the aim of enhancing the depth of this discovery, primarilyby illustrating a number of subjects that have not been previously explored. As a result, this exhibition doubles the number of reconstructions, so that the new collection now contains 120 models, making it the largest collection of Leonardo da Vinci models anywhere in the world.
ORIGINAL WORKS OF THE GREAT ARTISTS OF THE 16TH CENTURY.
Leonardo da Vinci was also a brilliant painter, sculptor and architect. The exhibition will explore his artistic output and his many masterpieces, principally by means of a number of previously unreleased films. In this way, the visitor will learn about Leonardo's architectural projects and treatises, while his famous drawing of the Vitruvian man sheds light not only on his skill as a draughtsman but also on his depth of knowledge about the proportions of the human body.
A more detailed look will be taken at some of his most famous paintings, such as Mona Lisa, St. Anne, the Virgin of the Rock, the Last Supper and the Battle of Anghiari. In addition, the exhibition will be further illustrated with remarkable original documents dating from the Renaissance period, produced by the artists of Leonardo's time or by later artists who were inspired by his example: Michelangelo, Albrecht Dürer, Giorgio Vasari, Donatello, Verrocchio, Giambologna (Jean de Boulogne), Raphael, Francesco Guardi, Canaletto,...
